Common Causes of No-Start We Can Repair at Our Barboursville, VA Auto ShopIt's important to be proactive about getting to the shop when you first notice that your engine isn't starting as easily as usual. If you ignore the issue, then you run the risk of it worsening to the point that your car won't start at all, leaving you stranded and in a frustrating situation. At Chuck's Auto Care, our local mechanics are highly experienced with identifying and fixing issues that prevent engines from starting.

What is preventing my engine from starting up?

Problems related to the fuel system are commonly to blame for no-start. With a faulty fuel pump, fuel won't be able to properly travel from the tank to the engine. Signs of a bad fuel pump include sputtering, surging, worsening gas mileage, and a whining noise coming from the tank. A clogged fuel filter can also make it harder for your engine to fire up. It's important to replace your fuel filter about every 25,000 miles so that you avoid this issue. Dirty fuel injectors are another common reason that engines struggle to fire up. Pouring a fuel additive into your tank can help with eliminating contaminants from injectors and intake valves.

An issue with your starter can also prevent your engine from coming roaring to life. A sign of starter trouble is that you turn the key and your engine doesn't start, but your dash lights come on and you hear a clicking sound. A faulty starter can also cause a grinding noise.

Issues with the battery/charging system also commonly cause no-start. Car batteries die due to issues including parasitic draws, old age, loose/corroded connections, and -- of course -- forgetting to turn off headlights. Alternator trouble can also cause a dead battery. Symptoms of alternator failure include malfunctioning interior electrical accessories, flickering/dimming headlights, and an illuminated warning light that reads ALT or GEN or comes on in the shape of a little battery icon.
